Wood buck, once the standard for the auto industry to build scale models of a car or part, are in part an influence on my wood sculptures.
I use my wood model skills to build abstract sculptures drawn from nature and primitive arts.
Wooden Horses
The Wooden Horses are for interior use only and are signed and numbered in editions of five per design.
The sculptures are available for sale at Roan and Black in Saugatuck, Michigan and through Art Cloud.
Wooden Birds
The birds are available as stand-alone sculptures. When mounted on a wall, the birds take flight and add movement and whimsy to an indoor environment. Each bird is carved individually, and they are available in black, red, or a yellow and black stain that follows the grain of the wood.
Wood Sculpture – The Process
I draw the horses to scale. I carve the individual parts before assembly and then โdry-clampโ the parts through the carving process to shape the wood. The first stages of the design process are similar for both my works in wood and in steel.
I like to use ash, because the wood beautifully maintains its grain through the blackening process. I char the statues with a blow torch and then wire brush to achieve a soft, blackened finish. The wooden birds are available in black, red, or a yellow and black stain that follows the grain of the wood.
Other forms
I like to explore new forms. I am working on a new style and design for the wooden horses. I have also created totems that draw upon primitive art forms.
