Steel Sculptures

Standing galvanized steel sculpture horse

I grew up in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky and built my career in Detroit. Through my journey, I experienced the strength and beauty of steel and horses. I have created steel sculptures that add visually dramatic displays for interior or exterior environments.

The steel horses use Cor-Ten or galvanized steel. The sculptures are signed and numbered in editions of five per design.

The sculptures are available for sale at Roan and Black in Saugatuck, Michigan and through Art Cloud.

Steel Sculptures – The Process

I always start with drawings, and then move to model-making, building cardboard prototypes at 2 ยฝโ€ = 1โ€™ scale.

In the modeling process I can understand how a piece will fill a space, how weight will be distributed and how light and air will interact with the art.ย ย

Similar to the auto industry process of modeling steel parts in wood buck, I make wooden sculptures first.

In fabrication, steel is cut, shaped, and welded. I am experimenting with different elements to allow movement in the sculpture.

Cor-Ten steel horses develop a beautiful copper patina through a natural weathering process. The rust serves as a protective coating.

Galvanized steel horses are acid washed to darken the surface.

Other forms

Although my work is considered abstract, there is a realistic base to the form and design.  I’ve recently explored expanding steel sculptures to include dogs. The abstract sketches start with the realistic form.
